A Virtualisation Assessment through VMware's Capacity Planner

Overview

Server consolidation starts with a capacity assessment to understand the current inventory of servers, their workload, and utilisation. From there we can identify opportunities for consolidation, model a consolidation plan utilising virtualisation, and conduct a total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis. RDA Group Capacity Planning Services can deliver a virtualisation assessment to help you assess your current server landscape to determine your potential savings by consolidating your existing physical IT infrastructure onto VMware virtual infrastructure.

Deliverables

• Gather system and performance data on existing servers in your environment (up to 1 month's worth). This involves installing VMware Capacity Planner Data Manager (one site, up to 4 collectors);
• Analyse data on existing servers (up to 200);
• Provide a server consolidation and virtualisation assessment report including a preliminary total cost of ownership analysis of the sampled environment and recommendations.

• Companies planning server consolidation projects who need guidance on sizing requirements and justification of expenditures to faciliate consolidation via virtualisation.

Requirements

• Dedicated networked (including Internet access) Windows 2000 Server SP3 or higher machine with at least 500 MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and 100MB free disk space;
• Local and domain administrator (root) access to existing servers to gather data for use in analysis.

• Deliver critical insights into resource utilisation for driving intelligent infrastructure capacity decisions;
• Estimate potential cost savings to be realised by undertaking server consolidation;
• Provide you with a variety of virtualisation scenarios and advise on the alternative which best meets your needs, objectives and constraints;
• Estimate required server hardware and VMware virtual infrastructure licenses.

• Assessment Report created and delivered offsite;
• Analysis conducted on up to 200 servers identified by customer;
• No charge on capacity planning licenses for up to 25 servers.
